# Source note — Operation Hard Ball and B.C. extortion accountability

**Evidence label:** political accountability commentary based on named reporting and police pages; indictments/charges are allegations unless proven in court.

## Trigger

A Facebook screenshot/full “I love Vancouver” graphic claimed: “WEST VANCOUVER SUSPECT ARRESTED IN FRANCE AFTER MASSIVE INTERNATIONAL CRIME PROBE.” The associated post text claimed that a West Vancouver man had been arrested in France and was awaiting extradition to the United States as part of an FBI-led operation involving alleged drug trafficking, extortion and Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing.

The screenshot/full graphic did not name a suspect. It was treated as a lead, not as proof. The graphic photo credit reads: “PHOTO: THE CANADIAN PRESS / DARRYL DYCK.”

## Main source findings

- CBC reported U.S. authorities said 24 suspects had been arrested in Canada, the United States and Europe as part of Operation Hard Ball, and that prosecutors charged 37 people across three indictments.
- CBC reported that RCMP worked with the FBI for two years and that the operation also involved police in Mexico, France and Spain.
- Global News reported three men in B.C. were arrested and charged in connection with the crackdown, identifying Ravinder Singh Dhanda, Jaskarn Baghri and Gurtej Singh Smagh in the drug-trafficking indictment context.
- National Post’s accessible text reported RCMP arrested three suspects in Surrey, West Vancouver and White Rock and would seek extradition to the United States.
- Surrey Police Service’s extortion page listed, as of July 6, 2026: 131 reported extortions, 20 related shots-fired incidents, 2 arsons, and 71 victims, including 35 repeat victims.

## Editorial decision

The iVoteNDP article should not say the B.C. NDP caused transnational organized crime, and should not repeat the screenshot’s exact “West Vancouver man arrested in France” wording as a verified fact. The accountability angle is narrower and stronger: provincial public safety, victim support, extortion-response transparency, multilingual reporting/support, and clear separation between confirmed local files and foreign indictment allegations.
